Handmade for the Holidays

Every year around this time, Skidmore releases something into the world that represents the very essence of who we are. For this project, there are no pre-existing parameters to abide by, no clients suggesting colors, and no limits to the deliverable. These are our ideas. Our execution. Our heart.

Last year, we created these amazing pins to commemorate our first year back downtown. This season, we created a set of greeting cards so extraordinary that we were considering a reprint before the ink was dry.

They are a gift for studio family and friends, but above all, they are a gift to ourselves. We were able to experiment with letterpress, an amazing technology that clients often shy away from, and go to print with the truest form of an idea – unaltered by rounds of revisions.

Printed by hand at Salt & Cedar in Eastern Market, these cards are an expression of our love for what we do.

The studio’s designers, illustrators and writers got together to create dozens of designs.

Then plates of the eight selected designs were made at Owosso Graphic Arts.

When the plates were locked in and the ink was mixed just right, Salt & Cedar got the press a-rolling.

After hours of printing, we were handed 800 cards by one very sore arm.

Sets of four were then packaged with a Platinum vellum binding and sent off to lucky recipients around the country.

Want some of these cards made with care? Good news – we’ll be selling them online very soon. Stay tuned!
