Sometimes we need to add a little something different into the mix. Different people. Different perspectives. They’re the catalysts that lead to different results.
It’s like Billy Beane says in Moneyball, “Adapt or die.”
With that spirit in mind, I want to introduce you to a fellowship program called Challenge Detroit. Their mission is to bring new people with new perspectives to our city. They recruit young, talented professionals from different backgrounds and educations to work, play, live and give in Detroit. Awesome, right? When I heard what they were doing, I couldn’t wait to get Skidmore involved. So I was pumped when we were selected as one of 35 host companies.
In choosing our first fellow, we were encouraged to interview some candidates from our industry and some “non-traditional” candidates with different areas of interest.
I didn’t really expect that one of these non-traditional candidates would be right for us, but yesterday morning we welcomed our first fellow. His name is Sarms, and he’s definitely unlike anyone we’ve ever had at the studio.
He’s got an MBA, just finished law school and vacations in Iraq. All characteristics that are unique to our little kick-ass creative studio. Sure, we interviewed some great creative and design candidates too. But we decided to take a chance on somebody that didn’t fit the traditional mold.
So what is Sarms going to be doing when he gets here? I don’t know yet! But I’m pretty excited to find out. In our world, being smart, creative and motivated goes a long way. We know that bringing a perspective unlike anyone else in the room can only improve studio brainstorms and the quality of our work.
Challenge Detroit encouraged us to look outside our normal sphere in choosing our fellow. They gave us a different perspective and it led to different results. Here’s me encouraging you to do the same. Challenge yourself with your next hire and add a little something different to the mix.
